Hartino to feggaraki – Melina Mercouri

Melina Mercouri sings Hartino to feggaraki, a Greek song which means “Paper Moon” in English. It is one of the most famous songs sung by Melina Mercouri, composed by her beloved friend, the legendary Manos Hadjidakis. Hartino to feggaraki is a song written for the theatrical play “Streetcar named Desire” (Leoforeio o pothos), and this video clip featured here is a small sample of this play and Melina’s performance as Blanche Dubois, one of her best roles in her acting career.

Melina Mercouri with her loving and passionate voice sings Hartino to feggaraki in an almost haunting way; although many people tried to sing this song ever since, it seems that she has marked it with her voice and style, touching our souls and minds. Maybe because she was as passionate as Blanche, and because the sensitive lyrics and music written by Manos Hadjidakis suit her style and personality perfectly. It was in 1949 but her voice and this song are still so unique and unsurpassable.

Music : Manos Hadjidakis

  1. The video does not exist any more, can you replace it please? Nice website. It reminds me so much the time I was back in Greece. Oh, and I would like to make a suggestion. Add Kiki Dimoula’s poem ‘I perifrasti petra’. I keep listening to all the time.
